ERIN, Wis. — If you want a summary of the first day of the 2017 U.S. Open, here it is: There were as many amateurs under par on the day (2) as there were top 10 golfers in the world.
Happy U.S. Open , everyone! Well, to everyone who didn’t drink the water near the 12th hole at Erin Hills. A report surfaced late Thursday night that E. coli bacteria was found at one of the course’s hydration stations. Combine that with a blimp crashing on Thursdayand this tournament got off to a pretty rough start.
But many players fared a lot better in their first crack at Erin Hills, with a record 44 golfers breaking par in the first round. And no one played better than Rickie Fowler, who opened with a seven-under-par 65 to tie another tournament scoring record. All eyes will be on Rickie come Friday afternoon when he tees off at 2:36 PM (EDT). Amazingly, none of those 44 players breaking par were ranked in the top six in the Official World Golf Ranking. All of those guys shot over par, including a 79 and 78 from Jason Day and Rory McIlroy, respectively. Get caught up on the winners and losers from Thursday, and follow Friday’s action right here:
A brilliant start does not always translate into a stellar finish, but Rickie Fowler is in an excellent position to put his stamp on the 2017 U.S. Open at Erin Hills after firing an opening round score of seven-under par.
Fowler played bogey-free golf at the Erin, Wisconsin, course that features thick fescue in many of the rough areas, and he looked thoroughly comfortable in the environment.
However, Fowler had ideal conditions Thursday because he played much of his round in the morning when the winds were calm and there was still some moisture on the course.
When he tees off Friday at 2:36 p.m. ET, the course will have been baked by the sun for the last two days and the winds could pick up. Under those circumstances, the course will be more difficult to play than it was during the first morning of the tournament.
